Why the UAE Has Become a Leading Base for Private Wealth

For families with significant assets across multiple countries, the key question is rarely just where wealth is held. It is how that wealth is structured, managed and preserved across borders, generations and changing rules. On that measure, the UAE has become one of the most attractive bases in the world for private wealth.

The appeal is not a single headline benefit. It is a combination of no personal income tax, a competitive corporate tax regime, long-term residency options and mature financial centres, backed by strong international connectivity. Used well, these features support a wealth strategy. On their own, they are not a plan.

A Competitive Tax Environment

The UAE does not levy personal income tax on individuals. For businesses, corporate tax generally applies at 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% on taxable income above that threshold, subject to the applicable rules, reliefs and exemptions. For a wealthy family, effective planning is about far more than the headline rate. Structures must be compliant, commercially genuine and appropriate in every jurisdiction the family touches, because residence in the UAE does not switch off obligations elsewhere.

Long-Term Residency, and What It Does Not Automatically Do

The UAE Golden Visa provides renewable long-term residency of five or ten years, depending on the qualifying category, giving families stability and a base from which to operate. It is important to separate two ideas, however. Holding residency is not the same as being tax resident, and tax residency depends on an individual's circumstances and the rules of each relevant country. Treating a visa as a complete tax solution is a common and costly mistake.

Structuring Family Wealth

The DIFC and ADGM offer sophisticated, internationally recognised frameworks for wealth structuring, including foundations, trusts, holding structures, special purpose vehicles and family office solutions. These can support asset protection, governance, succession, consolidated ownership and long-term family planning. There is no single correct structure. The right one depends on the family's assets, objectives, beneficiaries and the other jurisdictions involved.

International Connectivity

With strong links to Europe, Asia, Africa and the wider Gulf, the UAE is a practical operating base for families whose businesses, investments and property sit in several countries. A UAE-based family office or holding structure can act as a coordination point, bringing together advisers, banks and assets under a consistent approach rather than a patchwork of local arrangements.

Compliance Comes First

None of these advantages remove the need for careful planning. Corporate tax, VAT, accounting, economic substance, reporting, regulatory and residency requirements all have to be considered where they apply. The strongest wealth strategies are built in a clear order: compliance and substance first, then the legal and financial structure that sits on top. Reversing that order is where problems tend to begin.
